Savvy Sliders: The Detroit Slider Going National

Technomic ranked it seventh-fastest-growing chain in America with 52.2% sales growth in 2024. Here's what operators need to know before the pipeline markets fill up.

By Justin K. Sellers · 12 min read · April 14, 2026

In 2024, Savvy Sliders posted 52.2% sales growth. Technomic ranked it the seventh-fastest-growing chain in America.

That number belongs in the same sentence as Dave's Hot Chicken and 7 Brew, brands that are now household names nationally. Savvy Sliders is not there yet. But at 57 open locations across nine states, with 60 units in development and a 2026 target of 35 new openings, it is moving at the same pace.

The concept is straightforward and operationally sound: fresh-never-frozen 100% Angus beef sliders, served through a drive-thru format built for speed, owned and operated by franchisees required to be present on site. New markets are tracking over $2 million in annual revenue. The Indiana expansion is documented and real. The franchisee demand is verified.

This is a brand earning serious attention. Here is why.

A note on FDD transparency: As of April 14, 2026, Savvy Sliders has not confirmed a 2025 FDD filing in any public database. Three comparable growth brands — Dave's Hot Chicken, Smalls Sliders, and Slim Chickens — have each filed 2025 FDDs with current Item 19 financial performance data. The most current publicly available Savvy Sliders data reflects 2023 operating results. Prospective franchisees must request the current FDD directly from Savvy Sliders Franchise LLC.

The Founders: Detroit Roots, National Ambition

Happy (Amer) Asker built his first restaurant brand from a single Detroit location in 1994. Happy's Pizza grew to 60 units across Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois, a genuine multi-unit regional chain built from scratch. That operating history is the foundation under everything Savvy Sliders has become.

Happy Asker has a federal tax conviction from 2014 and served his sentence before building Savvy Sliders from zero beginning in 2018. In December 2024, he acquired BurgerFi out of bankruptcy, adding 85 units to a portfolio now spanning over 200 locations across all Happy Group concepts.

Day-to-day franchise operations are led by Sonny Asker, Happy's son, as COO of Happy Group. He is the executive franchisees encounter most directly throughout development and ongoing support.

"We want to just do it the right way and open up these stores in the right locations with the right people, people that could be like an extension of us in the way that we operate, because operations is everything to us.", Sonny Asker, COO, Happy Group, QSR Magazine, February 12, 2026

The complete founder background, including what it means for prospective investors, is covered in the Savvy Sliders Deep Dive.

The Menu That Reimagined a Regional Staple

The core product is a made-to-order slider on a brioche bun, using 100% certified Angus beef that is never frozen. That supply chain commitment is the brand's single most defensible quality claim against every QSR competitor using frozen patties.

Signature Items: - Beef: Classic Angus, Double Patty "Big Signature," Steakhouse Ribeye, The Hangover (fried egg) - Chicken: Hand-Breaded Fried, Grilled, Fish (English Cod) - Falafel: Spicy Falafel slider (vegetarian/halal-adjacent) - Sides: Seasoned Cajun fries, hand-spun custard shakes - Catering: 24-pack and 48-pack party packs

The combo box, two sliders, fries, and a drink, competes directly with full-service fast food on price, not premium fast casual. That is exactly where late-night and lunch traffic concentrates.

The seasonal LTO strategy is active. The 2026 Szechuan Sensation features kimchi and Szechuan garlic aioli. The 2025 summer menu included Pulled Pork Sliders and an S'mores Shake.

Indiana franchisees cite the 24-pack and 48-pack catering packs as a primary driver of office and event revenue. Catering revenue is independent of drive-thru traffic counts, a meaningful floor for operators managing slow dayparts.

The Expansion: Fifty-Seven Open, Sixty in Development

Savvy Sliders began franchising in July 2019. By February 2026, the brand had reached 57 confirmed open locations, with Franchise Times' Top 400 2025 report listing 62 units based on their data window. Sonny Asker has stated publicly a goal of reaching four openings per month in 2026, up from 2–3.

Active confirmed markets as of April 2026: Michigan (highest concentration), Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Pipeline markets announced via Instagram: Nevada, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, New York, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta, all unserved by Savvy Sliders as of April 14, 2026.

The Indiana expansion is the most instructive case study available. Mike Bauer, a 22-unit Subway operator, opened in Lebanon, Indiana in August 2024 after visiting nearly two dozen Michigan locations before committing. Lafayette and West Lafayette followed. The franchisee who researches the product, brings proven operational discipline, and has authentic community roots is the profile the brand says it actively selects for, and the Indiana results confirm it works outside Michigan.

A co-branded format with Fat Boy's Pizza is also operating in Louisiana, with Pasadena, Texas and Dearborn, Michigan announced for 2026. Multi-brand operators within the Happy Group system have a revenue diversification option that single-brand franchisees don't access.

What Customers Are Actually Saying

On the Sliders:

"Loved the ribeye regular slider, great quality meat and I tried the chicken one with pickle, boomer sauce and lettuce and it was all quality meat and very tasty!", Google Play Store reviewer, April 11, 2025

"I personally enjoyed the steakhouse ribeye and hangover sliders alongside the helpful crew that got it out in a timely manner.", Yelp reviewer, Columbus, OH (verified open April 2026)

On Service and Speed:

"Amazing food service was really quick all the workers were very very nice and were willing to help.", Brian T., East Lansing, MI, Yelp, March 14, 2026

Pattern: The never-frozen Angus beef shows up in customer language without prompting. Quality is the first word reviewers reach for, not price or atmosphere. At locations where the kitchen is running correctly, the drive-thru speed standard holds. For prospective franchisees, the question is how consistently that standard holds across operators, not whether the standard exists.

The No BS Take

What They're Doing Right:

1. Technomic-Verified Growth at Scale

52.2% sales growth in 2024, ranked seventh-fastest-growing among large chains in America. That is an audited number from the industry's primary data source, not a brand press release. Restaurant Business' Future 50 2025 independently confirmed the growth trajectory.

2. Never-Frozen Angus Beef, A Defensible Commitment

Every Savvy Sliders location uses 100% certified Angus beef that is never frozen. It is a daily supply chain decision with real cost implications, and it is the most credible quality differentiation the brand has against every QSR slider competitor using frozen patties.

3. Owner-Operator Accountability Built Into the Model

Savvy Sliders requires franchisees to be present operators, within 30–45 minutes of their location. That structural requirement eliminates the passive investor problem that degrades service standards at brands that don't enforce it. The Indiana case study confirms the model works: experienced operators with community roots are delivering the strongest results.

4. Catering as a Second Revenue Stream

The 24-pack and 48-pack party pack program gives franchisees a documented revenue channel independent of drive-thru traffic. A franchise concept with a scalable catering product has a floor that pure drive-thru concepts don't.

5. Community Engagement That National Advertising Cannot Replicate

The "More 2 Love" program, coat drives, hospital meal donations, school sports partnerships, builds customer loyalty that scales with genuine operator investment in the local market. The Lebanon, Indiana opening documented community response within 90 days.

Why This Matters For Operators

The Opportunity:

- 52.2% Technomic-verified sales growth in 2024, the growth story is audited and real - New markets tracking over $2 million in annual revenue, with a documented Indiana multi-unit case study - Investment range of $411,000–$965,000, lower than most comparable growth-stage fast-casual brands - 60+ units in development with pipeline markets (NV, IL, TN, KY, NY, Pittsburgh, Atlanta) still available for first movers [/SPLIT_INSIGHT]

- Owner-operator model that creates accountability at every unit, not a passive-investor franchise

Key limitations remain:

- Current FDD and Item 19: The most recent publicly confirmed Savvy Sliders FDD is the 2024 filing. A 2025 update may exist but has not been indexed in any public database as of April 14, 2026. Request the current FDD directly from the brand before committing. - Michigan closure explanations: Two locations, Taylor (22319 Goddard Rd) and Lansing (6045 S Cedar St), are permanently closed per Yelp as of April 2026. The brand has not made a public statement explaining these closures. - AUV by unit age: The ~$1.72M Item 19 AUV figure reflects 2023 operating data. Year-two and year-three performance for the 2022–2023 new-market class is not publicly disclosed.
